The Halifax Rainmen’s victory Sunday may prove to be a pivotal win in their PBL season, as the team accomplished several key feats in defeating the Rochester Razorsharks, 102-99.
The Rainmen bounced back from a tough defeat to the league’s other undefeated team, after suffering a road loss Thursday to the league-leading Puerto Rico Capitanes, who are now 8-0.
In beating the Razorsharks, the Rainmen also knocked off the league’s defending champs, but it was not without some tense moments. Leading by a comfortable 13-point margin at the half, the Razorsharks kept gnawing away at the Rainmen’s lead until they tied the score at 90, with just under four minutes left to play.
But the Rainmen showed resilience, not only rebounding from Thursday’s loss, but in refusing to choke down the stretch Sunday. Some key three-point buckets in the final minutes helped the Rainmen hang on to the victory and send one of the largest and noisiest crowds of the season home happy.
Desmond Ferguson, with a big fourth quarter, led the Rainmen with 26 points, while Eric Crookshank hit for 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
The Rainmen remain undefeated at home and improve their record to 6-2, moving them ahead of the Razorsharks, 5-1, into second place behind the Capitanes.
Next up for the Rainmen are the Buffalo Stampede, 2-5, who visit the Metro Centre next Sunday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. Next Sunday’s game is Cure on the Court in support of Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – Atlantic Region. Be sure to wear pink!
